Electroacupuncture
Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM) and Electrical Stimulation (Estim)
Frequency-specific microcurrent (FSM) is an integrative therapeutic technique that we use alongside our acupuncture treatments to amplify and accelerate healing. FSM is administered through electrode pads applied to the skin. Unlike tradition estim or TENS, microcurrent is an alternating, low voltage, and sub-sensory electrical current (less than 1 mA), which is of a similar magnitude to the currents generated endogenously by the healthy human body. Because of the oscillating and vibrational nature of MC, it is used for restoration and for building qi and blood in the body. From a western medical perspective, research shows, it helps increase cellular energy through boosting the production of atp in the mitochondria. Laura describes the sensation of microcurrent like “medical reiki” or an “electrical sound bath”. Microcurrent is like energetically plugging in to recharge your battery. At Wildflower Acupuncture, we enhance our acupuncture treatments by integrating both microcurrent and electrical stimulation (estim), carefully calibrated to specific frequencies tailored to your condition and needs. Estim is clipped onto the acupuncture needles as pictured to the right in order to enhance stimulation and relieve pain. Often, we combine these two techniques within a single session to foster a deeply restorative and soothing experience. Laura regularly incorporates microcurrent (MC) or Estim therapy for almost all acupuncture patients, finding it particularly effective for conditions such as neuropathy or nerve damage, mental health challenges, chronic stress, and psycho-emotional pain.
FAQs
01
What is Electroacupuncture?
Electroacupuncture enhances traditional acupuncture by incorporating electrical stimulation (estim) to boost healing, alleviate pain, and promote the repair of cells, tissues, and nerves. In this process, Laura inserts needles into precise acupuncture or trigger points and connects each needle to a small electrode clip. Estim is not the same as microcurrent or TENS. Instead, our electroacupuncture uses a direct current to decrease pain, clear out inflammation, and trigger the release of the body's natural pain-relieving neurotransmitters. The direct current of estim flows in one direction, helping to clear through blockages and retrain nerve pathways, directing sensation from one point to another. For example, in the case of neuropathy, it helps remind the nerve that a sensation needs to travel from the nerve root in the low back to the destination at the foot. The frequencies of estim are finetuned according to what is being treated and specifically tailored to each patient's primary goals and comfort.
